Hibiscus Tea

Gudhal

Deep-crimson calyces of the roselle flower, hand-harvested and sun-dried across India's warm growing belts. Naturally caffeine-free, the infusion pours a vivid ruby red with a bright, cranberry-tart edge and a clean floral finish. Steep hot as a soothing evening cup, or chill into the Mexican-style agua fresca known as flor de jamaica.

Questions

Is gudhal the same as hibiscus tea?
Yes. Gudhal is the Indian name for the hibiscus flower; the dried calyces of the roselle variety (Hibiscus sabdariffa) are what brew into hibiscus tea, also called flor de jamaica or karkade.
Does hibiscus tea contain caffeine?
No. It is a herbal infusion made from flower calyces, not tea leaves, so it is naturally caffeine-free and suits any time of day.
Why is the brew so red and tart?
The calyces are rich in natural anthocyanins and fruit acids, which give the infusion its signature ruby colour and bright cranberry-like tang.
